For Days Like These: When there’s an extra day added to your year…

The three of us at tracks of foxes aim to share with you some crafty projects we’ve been putting our hands to, some adventures we’ve been spending our time on, we also thought we’d share with you some of the stuff that fills our stereos, book shelves, screens and tummy’s on emotional days, hope you might identify with some days like these.

Happy Leap day!

Some might call this a normal Wednesday but we’re claiming it as an added bonus to our week/month/year. So mind as well use it as an excuse to spend our time doing lots of pointless activities (or more like non-activities)

OR girls propose to your fellas! ;)

Watching:

Lord of the Rings Trilogy Extended version (You got a whole extra day right?)

Back-to-back season of a quality TV series – only stopping for food and toilet! (I would re-watch Friday Night Lights season 1 – one of the greatest TV shows ever made in my opinion!)

Leap Year movie (has to be done really…)

Listening:

A random mix of melancholy, country and hip hop…  No need to stick to any rules on this day!

Dylan LeBlanc Changing Of The Seasons

A Tribe Called Quest I Left My Wallet In El Segundo (Just because…)

Dixie Chicks The Long Way Around  (Guilty pleasure…)

Phosphorescent We’ll Be Here Soon

Consuming:

Leap Year Cocktail (Yes – there is one!!)

½ oz Grand Marnier

2 oz Gin

½ oz Sweet Vermouth

¼ oz Lemon Juice

Popcorn (You’ve got to have some nibbles with all that telly watching!)

Hope you’re treating yourself by doing nothing on this 29th February!

Found Things: Quill and Fox

One day when I was trawling the interweb I came across the exquisite cards and invitations by Quill and Fox’ and fell in love. I am now coming up with ridiculous reasons to send invitations and cards just so I can buy some!

‘I would like to invite you to, umm. .. Wednesday ??’

Once you have seen her work you will totally understand!

I love this sweet Terrarium Postcard Set. I had to google what a terrarium is but it’s pretty much what it looks like, cute plants in little things. Don’t judge my stupidity.. please.

I am aware that we are in the wrong season for Christmas cards but I will tell you a true story, these are gorgeous regardless. Plus, I am totally imagining that there is Baileys in that hot chocolate I see!

Check out these little bad boys! I love writing and drawing with pencil plus it is no secret I have a weakness for moustaches and monacles. There really is no need to say anymore.

Check her out here  http://www.quillandfox.com/  and here http://quillandfox.tumblr.com/ . If you want to buy her lovely things you can get them at her etsy shop.

I reread one of my all time favourites Little Women, Louisa M. Alcott.

Image

Sarah:  I curled up with my childhood favourite, Roald Dahl’s Matilda.

Listening to some old music.

Image

Hanna: Listened to Ryan Adams, Flaming Lips and others that transported me back to some happy memories. <3

Celeste: I filled my ears with ‘Slow Train Coming‘ Bob Dylan and ‘Gold‘ Ryan Adams.

Sarah: A little memory place… A walk, with my boy, in some woodland called the mundens, where we spent much time walking and talking the spring of 2008, when we got together…

Write an old-fashioned letter

Sarah: Here is my old-fashioned letter to my Granny.

This weekend…

Sometimes you have weeks that knock you a bit, whether that be disappointment, busyness or work, you can find yourself a little disheveled come friday.

So this weekend,  enjoy glimpses of the sun and look back at things that have made you you.

Enjoy things that you know make your heart glad!

Think of this weekend as a weekend of Nostalgia, you could:

Find old pictures?

Listen to some old music?

Reread a favourite book or poem?

Wear something you’ve had for a long time? (for those hoarders out there that won’t be too hard for us to find!)

Watch an old show or film that you know all the words to?

Go somewhere that holds good memories?

Write an old-fashioned letter to someone special?

These are just a few of the nostalgic things that us foxes are planning for this weekend. We will fill you in Monday on what we got up to.

If you do anything fun and nostalgic send us your piccies and we’ll post them too on our

‘Weekend in Pictures’ on Monday!

A very happy, nostalgic weekend to you!

Make, Do, Mend: Chalkboard paint

It is no secret that I’m a little bit obsessed with the old chalkboard spray… If we weren’t renting I’m sure half of our house would be covered with the stuff.  You can get it in most home depots for about £ 6. Many old pieces have got a new lease of life with this black magic! :)

Here’s a few suggestions:

Spray paint a mixed collection of old frames with it and get a more uniform look on your walls or shelves. Many charity shops have an endless collection of frames for next to nothing.

Spray it on clay pots or planters, stick some compost and seeds in and write what it is on the side. Simple, practical and looks great too!

Top tip: Do your spraying outside or open windows wide open – otherwise it might make you feel a bit funny in the head!

Make Do Mend: Coconut Cinnamon and Banana Pancakes

Merry Pancake Day!

Image

So, I love pancake day but not crepes. I would say that their main offense to me is that they are too skinny, but since I am feeling honest today I will have to admit that I am entirely incapable of making one. But back to skinny, waify, floppy ‘pancakes’ that are had here on Shrove Tuesday. In my opinion pancakes are fat. They have buttermilk, bananas and maple syrup. It must be the canadian half of me.

Some of my favourite moments in my entire life have consisted of wakening to the smell of fresh coffee made by my pop, eating coconut pancakes made by my mum, sitting on their porch in the sun, talking about everything and anything. Now I think of it, I miss them a great deal just now.

So in tribute to my fam and my canadian heritage here is a little recipe for some thick coconut, cinnamon and banana pancakes.

P.s. If these pancakes were a man I would kiss them right on the face!

Coconut Cinnamon and Banana Pancakes  (should make enough for four)

1 1/3 Cup of Plain Flour

2 Tablespoons Sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1  teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

2 pinches of salt

1  cup of buttermilk … or normal milk (may need to add another dash or two)

Vanilla Extract

Coconut

Cinnamon

Banana

1. In one bowl whisk (I love that word!) Flour, Sugar, Baking Powder, Bicarb Soda, Salt, Cinnamon and Coconut.

2. In another bowl whisk oil, vanilla extract and buttermilk.

Image

3. Combine the two bowls mixture will be thick as mate, fold in some banana (or any fruit you wish!)

Image

4. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and cook batter over a medium heat until you see the magic bubbles on top.

Here is the fun bit..

5. FLIP me baby one more time. Pancakes will pretty much taste good all the time but they look prettiest golden brown.

 ‘Golden brown texture like sun
Lays me down with my mind she runs
Throughout the night
No need to fight
Never a frown with golden brown’
Sorry, it’s something I have to do whenever I say ‘golden brown’, it’s weird, I know. Don’t judge me.

Serve with more banana and maple syrup.

You can pretty much add anything you want, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, chocolate, the frying pan is your oyster!!

I adapted this recipe from a little blog I love, www.joythebaker.com .
