It seems that I have a thing for meeting incredibly talented ladies called Tracey in Coffee shops?

I just started my new job at a sweet coffee shop in central London and amidst the espressos, double shots and business people of Farringdon I got to meet this lovely family from California. Being super nosy while clearing their cups, I asked about the awesome contents of her table and found her to be one of the coolest mums. She designed this amazing travel kit for her lovely little girl to engage in their London adventures. Each pack has it’s own logo, questions, sketchbook. I want one!

Tracey also runs a beaut blog and design company. Have a little gander, you’ll see pictures from their adventures in London and also the coffee shop I’m now working in!

Penny for your thoughts: The Great Gatsby

photo

After almost eight years I find my self coming to the end of a season and starting the beginning of a new one.

I was walking along a road I had walked so many times in the last eight  years, a road that had before been an escape, a road that I had lived off, a road which I had known and had known me but somehow it felt different…the sun shone brightly (and about time that you made an appearance sun!) As I walked, in the sun,  I read. From experience I have learnt that reading and walking can be a dangerous affair…It is an art to avoid lamp posts, pedestrians, prams and dog poop. I don’t want to sound smug but I pretty much nailed it.

”And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees … I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” F. Scott Fitzgerald

Sometimes it happens like this. That there is a book, poem, song that you have read or heard a thousand times and the words that you have seen, known & missed jump out at you and describe for you feelings, hopes or dreams that you may not have even known how to articulate. This has happened to me, today in the sun.

Cheesy but true.

P.S. I can’t wait for Baz Luhrmann’s film of this book, ‘The Great Gatsby’ to come out and blow my mind.

F. Scott Fitgerald and Baz Luhrmann in my mind only a winning combination!

Happy Thursday/Friday morning

Dress Up: Small Earth Vintage

Be warned: If you have a weakness for pretty vintage things look away NOW.

I remember when I was little and I thought all I need to be happy was some pink glitter jelly sandals (turns out they’re back in?),  or a Barbie, or blonde hair, or a Baby G watch, or some Doc Martins, or TV Hits Magazine, or a boyfriend… Today, all I need to be happy is one of these little numbers from Small Earth Vintage Clothing

Small Earth Vintage Clothing,  you could get me in an awful lot of trouble… but the kind of trouble I like!

Happy browsing, shopping, coveting.

Make Do Mend: Raised Bed.

So the warm and fuzzy thoughts of living in community and growing all your own veg has led me to actually trying to make a communal veggie patch happen.

The key, so far, to a communal veggie patch is people. First I spoke about it enough to other people that they made sure I could make it happen and I got a River Cottage book for Christmas from the veggie gurus Hanna and Jon. Then got my lovely friend, and guest blogger,  Jonny to help make it happen. It was never going to happen if it were down to me. So grateful for community making it possible.

We went scouring for pallets.

pallets

We smashed them up.

apart

Stopped for a little coffee break. Coffee and Ikea cinnamon buns (no horse.)

Put them back together.

back together

And after a whole day of scouring, smashing, nail removing, sawing and drilling this is what we created. Proud.

raised bed

The best part about this is that so far it has been entirely free!!

Now all there is to do is make the rest of it happen and pray for the snow to stop!

Found: Extracurricular Magazine

In celebration of ‘Good Thursday’ and Easter break here is a little publication that, coupled with some bourbon, has warmed my little heart this last week.

photo (2)

Thanks to Rohan Anderson, Whole Larder Love, instagramming I stumbled across this beautiful publication ‘for creative folk’ that comes out of New Zealand. Every thing good comes from the South Pacific.

Extracurricular magazine is a proper treat. Courtesy of the last issue I now have grande plans to make some homebrew, homemade ice blocks (if the sun ever arrives) and a little dinosaur terrarium. (!?!)

Looking forward to the next issue ‘New Beginnings’ which is timely as I am coming to the end of a long old chapter and starting a new little adventure in the next few weeks.  You can pick up past issues and the New Beginnings issue at BigCartel.

If you want to see pretty things, have good ideas and be inspired this little magazine is what you need to get your hot little hands on.  True.

They also have a sweet blog chockas with beautiful things, ideas and artists.

Thank you New Zealand for making something so special that we get to enjoy!

Friday Finds…

In case this week has made you want to run away with a bear to the forest here is Ursus, a beautiful charcoal animation by Latvian artist… (Thank you Liga Kitchen for the find!)

I am a sucker for ships and an old man with an aussie accent, so this is quite perfect. Thank you Smith Journal. A little story about an Australian man who puts ships in bottles… magic.

‘Nothing good gets away.’ Some wise words from Steinbeck on love, written to his son on hearing news of his falling in love with a girl at boarding school. Those boarding school girls, they break hearts!

Here it is courtesy of the beaut little blog that is, Letters of Note.

New York
November 10, 1958

Dear Thom:

We had your letter this morning. I will answer it from my point of view and of course Elaine will from hers.

First—if you are in love—that’s a good thing—that’s about the best thing that can happen to anyone. Don’t let anyone make it small or light to you.

Second—There are several kinds of love. One is a selfish, mean, grasping, egotistical thing which uses love for self-importance. This is the ugly and crippling kind. The other is an outpouring of everything good in you—of kindness and consideration and respect—not only the social respect of manners but the greater respect which is recognition of another person as unique and valuable. The first kind can make you sick and small and weak but the second can release in you strength, and courage and goodness and even wisdom you didn’t know you had.

You say this is not puppy love. If you feel so deeply—of course it isn’t puppy love.

But I don’t think you were asking me what you feel. You know better than anyone. What you wanted me to help you with is what to do about it—and that I can tell you.

Glory in it for one thing and be very glad and grateful for it.

The object of love is the best and most beautiful. Try to live up to it.

If you love someone—there is no possible harm in saying so—only you must remember that some people are very shy and sometimes the saying must take that shyness into consideration.

Girls have a way of knowing or feeling what you feel, but they usually like to hear it also.

It sometimes happens that what you feel is not returned for one reason or another—but that does not make your feeling less valuable and good.

Lastly, I know your feeling because I have it and I’m glad you have it.

We will be glad to meet Susan. She will be very welcome. But Elaine will make all such arrangements because that is her province and she will be very glad to. She knows about love too and maybe she can give you more help than I can.

And don’t worry about losing. If it is right, it happens—The main thing is not to hurry. Nothing good gets away.

Love,

Fa

Have a beaut weekend. Be good to yourselves.

Field Trip: Weezer Cruise 2014

Wednesdays can occasionally feel like they have stolen your soul. Just me? Coffee break was spent dreaming of a Weezer cruise to the Bahamas.

I am going to quote Huffington Post, quoting Weezer…

‘Twelve years after they crooned “On an island in the sun, we’ll be playin’ an’ havin’ fun,” Weezer is once again making good on that promise with an upcoming Weezer Cruise to the Bahamas.’

Weezer, geeks before it was cool and all round weapons. True.

This video is nine years on and still a brightener on any day, even a Wednesday when it’s snowing and it should be spring!

P.s. I still think Richie Cunningham is a dreamboat.

Anyway, Weezer cruise to the Bahama’s. Shall we?
