5 of the best… ALBUMS that we’ve worn out in 2014

80s-record-player

As we review the last 12 months, we thought we’d share our greatest finds of 2014, from music, to movies, nights in and days out…

The Albums that have been the soundtrack to our 2014:

Hanna’s top 5

1. My Morning Jacket – At dawn

2. Ryan Adams – Gold

3. Rosie Thomas – If songs could be held (for sentimental reasons… our wedding song’s in it)

4. Phosphorescent – here’s to taking it easy

5. Lauryn hill – The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (erm, because of my teenage years)

Sarah’s top 5:

1. Ben Howard – I forget where we were

2. Beck – Morning Phase

3. Asleep versions – Jon Hopkins – ethereal, this will transport you to a some beautiful place between awake and asleep

4. Bombay Bicycle Club – So long, see you tomorrow (not least because of Rae Morris’s sublime voice)

5. James Vincent McMorrow – Post Tropical

And a sneaky honourable mention to “We are all young together” by Walter Martin – a kids album featuring Matt Berninger and Karen 0, that grown ups will love as much as kids – our baby boy goes crazy for this album!

Celeste’s top 5:

1. Chet Faker – Gold

2. St. Vincent

3. Bob Dylan – blonde on blonde

4. Bright Eyes – I’m wide awake it’s morning

5.  & it’s a tie b/w Bombay Bicycle Club – So Long, See You Tomorrow & M Ward – a wasteland companio

Field Trip: Iceland

Iceland 2K13, it happened. It was magic and now I want to move there. I have an extremely serious crush on Iceland.

We managed to coincide our trip with Iceland Airwaves which meant seeing Reykjavik in a particularly glorious state.  There was live music in every corner of Reykjavik even bookshops and hairdressers. If you were lucky you might have even stumbled across John Grant performing in a stairwell! (See!? Magic!)  I fear I can’t do it justice with words, but I am going to give it a go… and then they say a picture’s worth a thousand.

Iceland, the land of heartbreaking natural beauty, vikings, folklore, invisible people, music, beautiful water, volcanos, coffee, puffins, whales and arctic turns.

We had roast lamb and sweet potato, Christmas drinks in November.

We smoked pipes and cigars on the balcony.

We  chased the Northern Lights to the beach in pyjamas.

There were old friends and new friends, hilarity and conversations peppered with nostalgia, life, love and other difficulties.

Did I mention the Northern Lights? Yep. Saw them. Again, magic.

Oh… there’s also a penis museum!

Plenty of Sarah Lund’s jumpers to go around.

This is it. I warn you, for a good forty-five minutes following prolonged exposure, you could’ve used my bright red face as a beacon to guide you in the night.

unnamed-13Delicious coffee.

unnamed-10 Even their lighting is beautiful.

Even their fire hydrants are friendly.

It was so lovely to be reunited with Hanna, the beautiful and friendly Icelandic!

That’s enough of my gushing. You have probably realised that you should go. So just go.

A little Icelandic jaunt!

For the last little while I have had more than a little obsession with Scandinavia. In part to do with some particularly beautiful music (The Tallest Man on Earth, Mew, Olafur Arnalds), Nordic Noir and more than a healthy amount of Scandinavian chums.

All this to say, after being on my ‘wishful thinking’ list for last 5 years, I actually get to make a little trip to ‘the land of Ice that’s very nice’! (A little Mighty Ducks quote there for ya!)

One of my favourite regular coffee drinkers is a little bit of an expert on Iceland and when I asked him for tips this brilliant itinerary is what he came up with. This actually made my day! It’s too good not to share.

And now to the Northern Lights, the elusive Celestial treat, I know I’m not meant to get my heart set on seeing them but I can’t help it. I’ve wanted to see the Northern Lights ever since Joey and Dawson watched them in Season 3. (Don’t judge me.)

Until after Iceland!

Found: Terry’s Harmonica.

photo 1-1

I have a real fondness for old things. Old films, books, crockery, clothing and people. Why? I think it’s because of the stories. I love being reminded of the people that have gone before and survived this thing called life. I love the thought that the dress I’m wearing has been a part of someone other ladies story and memories and now is part of my own. Romantic and cheesy? Oh yes!

All that is to offer some form of prelude to one of my favourite birthday presents.

Last year, for my birthday, I was given this Hohner Chromatic Harmonica.  Beautiful and old. I love it, not because I have managed to master the art of the lovely mouth organ, sadly, but because of the original gift tags.

Here’s to you Terry and Jill, I hope your lives were full of love and the harmonica.

Field Trip: Nils Frahm at St Johns

The  last night of my 28th year was spent in St Johns in Hackney listening to the beautiful Nils Frahm.

photo-2

St Johns, is seriously one of the most beautiful venues I have been to!

photo

Nils Frahm is a delightful combination of intense beautiful music and light hearted banter. ‘This dramatic lighting and the music must be very intense for you, but I am actually in a very good mood!’

To top it all off we were in very good company, Lisa Hannigan was also in attendance, I was more than a little starstruck. . . Aaand she may have responded to a tweet of mine. What a way to end 28!

All of that is besides the point, back to Nils, make sure you have a little listen and if you get a chance go and see him.

Weekend in Pictures

Hello all! Hope you’re enjoying the heatwave and keeping hydrated! ;) Sorry about the radio silence recently… We’ve each had a lot going on from starting a new job, finishing up training to other big life changes. So we’re trying to keep Tracks going but when it’s quiet in here you know it’s because we’re just a bit hectic on this side.

Anyway, without further ado, here’s some snaps from our weekend…

Celeste had some good coffee, found a spoon in honour of Nessie and looked down to find Pac Man on the pavement.

Sarah is globetrotting in North America (lucky!), here’s a few beauties from Seattle.

Hanna is moving house (again!), in the midst of packing boxes there was a bit of time to give an old banged up bureau a new lease of life.

Hope ya’ll had a good one!
